The Sixtiers Encyclopedia: A Bold Presentation at Jam Factory Art Center
Last Friday, May 2, we held a truly remarkable event at the Jam Factory Art Center, and we are thrilled to share it with you. Our 10th and 11th-grade students presented the "Sixtiers Encyclopedia" — a project they have been dedicated to throughout the entire academic year. This wasn't just a final assignment; it was a profound exploration of our culture, reimagined by the younger generation.
From Vision to Reality
The project was spearheaded by our seniors: Yulia Oliinyk, Anya Dzhus, Sofia Turchyn, Sofia Stefiuk, and Andriy Zolotariov. These students didn't just propose the idea; they fully curated the implementation process — from assigning research topics and gathering materials to organizing the final presentation. We are incredibly proud of their leadership!
Every senior student conducted independent research, authored an article related to the Sixtiers movement, and created a unique design for the letter associated with their topic. The result is an original encyclopedia featuring one or more topics for every letter of the Ukrainian alphabet.
The Presentation: A Space for Dialogue and Inspiration
The event gathered guests, parents, teachers, and friends of the Lyceum. Our students welcomed the guests, moderated a panel discussion, and shared the story behind the project’s creation.
The evening program included:
Panel Discussion: "The Contribution of the Sixtiers to Ukrainian Culture," featuring our students and faculty.
Guest Lecture: A talk by Oleh Levii on monumental mosaics — a vibrant and iconic element of 1960s art.
In-Depth Conversation: A live session with the student-initiators, who shared the logistical and creative journey of bringing this project to life.
Why This Matters
We are firm in our conviction: education is not just about facts—it is about experience, inspiration, and personal engagement.
By working on this encyclopedia, our students didn’t just learn about the "Sixtiers" (Shistdesiatnyky) as historical figures. They reflected, analyzed, empathized, and discovered striking parallels with our modern reality.
This project gave every student the opportunity to feel a sense of belonging to the great tapestry of Ukrainian cultural history. It is milestones like these that confirm we are on the right path.
We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to this project and supported our students. We are thrilled to share these results with you and are already eagerly anticipating the next bold ideas from our PIPL community! ❤️
