Ancient Greece Comes to Life: 8th Graders’ Theatrical Journey
Our 8th-grade students recently embarked on a fascinating journey into the world of Antiquity during their IMLa (Integrated World Literature & Art) classes. They explored the fine arts of the era, revisited the history of Ancient Greece, and dived into excerpts from Homer’s heroic epics.
One of the greatest achievements of Ancient culture is theatre. It was in Ancient Greece that tragedy and comedy were born, characterized by unique features: a limited number of actors, the iconic use of masks to convey emotion, and the pivotal role of the chorus, which often acted as a character in its own right.
While reproducing all these ancient conventions in a modern setting is a challenge, our 8th graders rose to the occasion! As part of their study, they produced their own theatrical performance based on a scene from Homer’s Odyssey. The students took full creative control: they designed the sets, assigned roles, memorized scripts, and even choreographed a dance to capture the spirit of Ancient theatre in a contemporary format.
This hands-on experience didn't just help them understand Ancient Greek culture—it unleashed their creativity, acting talents, and team spirit.
